The monastery island ( Ukrainian Монастирський острів / Monastyrskyj ostriw , Russian Монастырский остров ) is a river island of the Dnieper in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro .

history

As far as it is known, it was first mentioned by name in the 17th and 19th centuries as " Burakowski " ( Russian. Бураковский ) or as " Bogomolowski " ( Russian. Богомоловский ). In 1926 the island was renamed " Komsomolski " ( Russian: Комсомольский ) and is now called Monastery Island, as there was a Byzantine monastery on the island in the 9th century .

Geographical location

The island is located in the Sobor district and forms part of the Shevchenko Park , from whose mainland part it is separated by the Bishop Canal , a branch of the Dnieper.

Sights and development

The island is connected to the rest of the city by a cable car and footbridge . The Merefa-Kherson Bridge , a railway bridge that connects the two Dneprufs with each other, runs across the northern part of the island .

In 1958 one of the greatest monuments in Ukraine was built in honor of Taras Shevchenko and in 1999 the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas was completed on the north side of the island .

There is also a freshwater aquarium , a zoo , some water sports clubs and a few other attractions on the island . There is also a sandy beach on the south side.
