The St. Katharina monastery ruins are located in the Helmstal valley between Sangerhausen and Wettelrode in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt .

There are now only two walls left. There is no agreement on whether there was a monastery or just a church on site . Why the church was not in the village is unknown - outside of a town this was not common, especially since the chronicle of the superintendent Samuel Müller from 1731 was written about the Helmsthal monastery . It was not a rural church, because the church building had a three-nave Late Romanesque basilica from the year 1218. As a patron was the Saint Catherine called. The church was previously consecrated to St. Mary in 1319 .

The decline of the church and the possibly associated monastery began in the 16th century. They were soon forgotten and the vegetation began to cover. The remains of the ruins have recently been uncovered and secured in order to stop the decline. The landscape confirms that people lived and worked here.
