The Knappensee is located in the Wackersdorf administrative community in the Schwandorf district in Upper Palatinate in Bavaria . To the north of the lake is the municipality of Wackersdorf and to the southeast the municipality of Steinberg am See . The location of the Knappensee is separated from the southern Steinberger See by a dam .
At the lake there is a wooden crucifix with a stone base (D-3-76-175-3),
Emergence
The origin goes back to the stopping of the lignite mining of the Bavarian lignite industry there in the 1980s . In 1981, the pit began to be flooded, which resulted in the lake with an average depth of 5 meters (deepest point: 6.5 meters).
The name of the lake is likely to go back to the miners' union or to the miners of the open-cast mine, through whose activity the lake was created after the end of mining.
tourism
The Knappensee circular path was laid out around the Knappensee , which has been intended to support tourism efforts in the region since 2012 by offering hiking and cycling trails with a length of 3900 meters. Two thirds of the circular lake path runs in the area of the municipality of Wackersdorf. There is a parking lot for cars on the south side.
Fishing on the lake is possible up to max. 5 fish / day only allowed with a fishing license and local day pass.
Water quality
The quality of the lake is checked by the Weiden water management office in the Upper Palatinate using a measuring point in the northern third . The measured values are available from the Bavarian State Office for the Environment . The lake water was strongly acidic after the opencast mine was flooded ( pH value in 1998: 3.6); In the meantime, contrary to expectations, this has changed, as the pH value is now said to be 6.8.
