The Knechtel KN-1 is a two-seater motor glider that was developed and built by Wilhelm Knechtel from 1978.

history

Wilhelm Knechtel began with the design in January 1978 after having previously tested a new drive principle on a Ka 4 Rhönlerche . Construction and construction started the following year. Knechtel made the first flight of the motor glider, which was built in his basement, on April 23, 1983 from the grass runway of the Aßlar airfield after extensive taxiing tests.

The aircraft with the registration number D-KNPF is exhibited in the Aviation and Technology Museum at Merseburg Airfield .

construction

The self-supporting middle-decker was created using the tail unit and wings of the Grob Twin-Astir . A 1.7-liter Limbach 1700 engine with 80 PS (59 kW) is installed in the bow segment of the plywood front fuselage, with two self-developed fixed propellers with 1.25 meters behind the cockpit via a long-distance shaft and a toothed belt drive with 3: 2 reduction Diameter drives. These are mounted as pull propellers on side arms that can be folded into the fuselage. Engine cooling air flows in through a large opening in the nose of the fuselage, the exhaust is located on the underside of the fuselage in front of the main landing gear. After flight tests, these outriggers were fixed and streamlined and double-bladed folding propellers in pusher configuration were used.

The cockpit has two seats arranged next to each other and is covered by a retracted, forward-opening acrylic glass hood. The tail wheel is controllable, at the wing tips there are auxiliary wheels for rolling with the wing down.
