The Aviation and Technology Museum Merseburg is a museum for historical technology founded in 1996 in Merseburg (Saxony-Anhalt). One of the attractions is an Il-62 aircraft , which was restored here in 2003 and converted into a café. The museum also presents everyday objects and their developments, such as computing technology or telecommunications .

history

On an airfield built in 1934, which was occupied by Soviet armed forces until 1991 after the Second World War, Dieter Schönau founded a small aviation and technology museum that was initially planned in Cologne. In 1996 the first machines and aircraft were transported to Merseburg and installed on the 60,000 square meter property. After a while, over 50,000 exhibits accumulated.

Exhibitions

Aeronautical engineering

The aerospace engineering exhibition space takes up the largest part of the museum. 85 missiles are presented, mainly from GDR times. Small aircraft such as the Messerschmitt Me 163 are exhibited in the hangar . In the outdoor area, military aircraft from the USA and the Soviet Union are presented, such as the Mikoyan-Gurevich military aircraft series or the Lockheed F-104 “Starfighter” . In addition, the Aviation and Technology Museum in the outdoor area presents walk-in civil aircraft and helicopters, such as the Il-14 , the Tu-134 , the helicopter Mi-8 or the Il-62 . In addition to complete aircraft, the technology museum presents exhibition rooms on aviation medicine (flight doctor), turbine technology , balloon technology and aircraft models.

Vehicle technology

The second part of the museum is occupied by vehicles. In separate halls, the fire fighting technology from different eras as well as models of two-wheel motorization after the Second World War in the GDR are shown.

Camera and cinema technology

There are also exhibits on camera and cinema technology . In addition to the portable cinema unit TK 35 and the school projector TK 16 from Zeiss -Werke, you can find the development of the first cinema projectors up to modern projectors . Cameras from the region will also be presented, especially those from Beier .

Computing and communications technology

A new part of the museum deals with the beginnings of printing and computing technology. In addition to the first automatic platen printing presses from Heidelberg, the main computer EDVA "EC1040" can be found here . The development of the computer and chip industry is shown using examples such as the Commodore , the Atari or the Sinclair .

Special exhibitions & meetings

The Aviation and Technology Museum Merseburg offers special exhibitions that change every month. The current exhibition is "How the Post Came to Merseburg". Meetings and days of action (see Cosmonaut Viktor Afanassjew's visit to the Technology Museum) also take place on the museum grounds.

Type of presentation

The exhibits are thematically divided into groups, mostly with small technical profiles. There are no long, detailed texts on the historical development of the exhibits.
