The film shows 80 inmates transitioning from prison life to life afterwards. He accompanies them while the Edwins Leadership & Restaurant Institute in Cleveland , Ohio tries to teach them life skills and gives them the opportunity to focus in order to reduce relapse rates. The film accompanies first-year participants during their training and when opening a French restaurant.

Knife Skills received generally positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes , the movie has an 89% rating based on nine reviews, with an average rating of 7.7 / 10. Film International's Matthew Sorrento wrote that Knife Skills was "a bright, delicate blend of culinary delights," which is why "it is really devastating to see the few excruciating setbacks."
