The Knockmealdown Mountains ( Irish Sléibhte Chnoc Mhaoldomhnaigh , pronunciation: [ ˈʃleːvʲtʲə xnʊk ˈvʷeːɫd̪aʊnə ]) are a mountain range on the border of Counties Tipperary and Waterford in Ireland . The mountain range runs from east to west between the two counties. The highest peak is the eponymous Knockmealdown ( Cnoc Mhaoldomhnaigh ) in County Waterford. Between the peaks Sugarloaf Hill ( Cnoc na gCloch ) and Knockshanahullion ( Cnoc Seanchuillinn ) is a winding pass road with a picturesque view (the Vee Gap , Bóthar na gCorr ), over which the regional road R668 runs from Lismore to Clogheen .

Surname

The Anglicized form Knockmealdown comes from the Irish Cnoc Mhaoldomhnaigh , "the hill of Muldowney", where the proper name Maoldomhnaigh means "follower of Sunday", so altogether "the hill of the follower of Sunday". Another interpretation is based on the Irish Cnoc Maol Donn : "bald brown hill". But the English still used in 1654 speaks against this. Knockmealdowny form.
