The Knodtsche House

The Knodtsche Haus in the East Frisian district town of Aurich ( Aurich district , Lower Saxony ) is a listed building from the 18th century. It has the address Marktplatz 23.

Building description

The Knodtsche Haus is a town house in the Dutch late baroque style . The narrow, two-story brick building has a mansard roof . Between the two floors there are four sandstone fields with stylized flower and fruit hangings. The portal in the center of the facade, which can be reached via a double staircase, is clearly highlighted. Its framing merges into the balcony. Inside there is preserved ceiling stucco and a faience oven from the time before 1780 in the Louis XVI style . (the so-called Louis-seize ).

history

The princely court architect Heinrich Horst built the building around 1735 and used it as a residence from then on. Later owners were the lawyer and secret government councilor and founder of the Sethestift , Christian Sethe and, since 1902, the Sparkasse of the former Aurich office . In 1913 it was bought by the lawyer and notary Wilhelm Knodt, from whom it takes its name. The building was later owned by the Aurich district, which used it as an adult education center, among other things. In 1997 an entrepreneur from Aurich bought the house and had it partially renovated. Then he leased it to various restaurateurs. Raiffeisen-Volksbank Aurich acquired the property in spring 2013 . The bank plans to move into the upper floor itself in the future. The ground floor, the cellar and the outdoor area with beer garden will continue to be used as a bistro, café and restaurant.
