Knut Johannes Steen (born November 19, 1924 in Oslo ; † September 22, 2011 ) was a Norwegian sculptor .

Life

Steen was trained by Per Palle Storm and Stinius Fredriksen at the Oslo State Art Academy . Because of a tuberculosis disease, Steen only had one functional lung. During the Second World War he therefore worked as a porter in the Oslo Accident Hospital. Steen lived in Carrara ( Italy ) since 1973 . His autobiography is titled From Garbage to Marble .

Steen essentially worked marble . His sculpture of the Norwegian King Olav V is internationally known . The work commissioned by the Oslo mayor was originally intended to be placed in front of the city hall. However, this was prevented by Norwegian politicians on the official justification “that the work was too monumental”. The statue shows the king, extremely popular with the Norwegian people, in military uniform and with a dictatorial pose. The art historian Tommy Sørbø interpreted the eight-meter-high work as “the crossroads of Dagobert Duck and Kim Il Sung ”. The statue is now in Gulen, Norway .

In Sandefjord there is a whaling monument by Steen as a rotating fountain.

His sculpture Oppgangssaga is in a waterfall on the Begna river near Hønefoss .
