history

The Ko'kaldosh Madrasa was built in 1569 under Khan Abdullah II by his milk brother and vizier Qulbobo Ko'kaldosh and is therefore the oldest building in the ensemble.

During the Soviet period the building was used as a hotel. The hall to the left of the main entrance served as a cinema.

In the years 1995–1997 the madrasa was thoroughly restored.

description

With its dimensions of 69 × 80 meters, the Koʻkaldosh Madrasa is also the largest building in the Labi Hovuz ensemble and the largest madrasa in Buxoro and one of the largest in Central Asia. The main facade has a central pishtak with an ivan . On both sides of the Pischtak there are three axes of two-storey pointed arch arcades with entrances to the individual living cells of the students. A three-quarter-round corner tower, which ends with the upper edge of the arcades, closes the facade off from the outside.

The madrasa has an inner courtyard of 35 × 43 meters, which is enclosed by two-story pointed arch arcades with entrances to the student living quarters. In total there are 160 of these living cells in the Koʻkaldosh Madrasa.

There is a high classroom on either side of the entrance, which is vaulted by a flat dome . The vaulted ceilings of these classrooms are covered with a network of arches that, together with the white joints between the fired bricks, form complex geometric patterns. On the outside, the domes are unglazed in brick construction.
