Typical petroleum stove in a classic design; until today z. Commonly used in India, for example, where petroleum is a common fuel in rural areas.

The cooker is a portable device for heating and cooking food and beverages. It is mainly used to prepare provisions for hikes, trekking tours, expeditions or other longer stays in the great outdoors. Stationary devices are called a stove .

There are stoves for solid, liquid and gaseous fuels as well as stoves that work with direct sunlight.

  • In wood stove (for example in the hobo stove ) collected wood, twigs, bark, pine cones or similar, combustible are mainly locally natural products used. The special shape of this stove provides an effective air supply, which is partly supported by a battery-operated fan. Its advantage is that the fuel is abundant in forests and therefore - assuming the appropriate hiking area - does not have to be carried far.
  • The Esbit cooker uses dry alcohol in cubes as fuel; it is the simplest and cheapest form of stove. However, its heating power is very low, so that it is mainly used to heat food. Real cooking is only possible when heating small amounts.
  • The spirit stove burns spirit , often with the addition of water, which reduces the formation of soot. Its advantages are the simple, cheap construction and the uncomplicated handling, because alcohol is not explosive; the disadvantages are a comparatively low heat output and difficult flammability at low temperatures. The trangia cooker also belongs to the group of alcohol stoves .
  • The gasoline stove works with petrol ( gas station regular gasoline or purified benzene ) as fuel. Some versions can also burn petroleum , kerosene , diesel fuel / heating oil and liquid gas as multi-fuel stoves (mostly with special nozzles) . Since, apart from the liquefied gas, all these fuels have to be converted into the gaseous state by heating prior to combustion in order not to form excessive soot, suitable stoves are relatively complicated in construction and handling.
  • The kerosene cooker works with kerosene .
  • The gas cooker uses liquid gas ( propane or butane ) in pressure bottles ( gas cartridges ). The advantages are easy handling and good adjustability. However, when it is very cold, they do not work or only work poorly, and the necessary pressure vessels increase the weight of the fuel to be carried. In addition, the connection system of the cartridges must match the cooker; Since there are different systems for this, this can lead to supply problems.
  • A solar cooker is a device that uses the energy of sunlight to generate heat. It is mainly used to prepare provisions for hikes, trekking tours, expeditions and for longer stays in the great outdoors. In many regions of the world, baking, boiling and drinking water are sterilized exclusively with solar ovens, for example in the poor countries of Africa, where many families have no electricity or gas connection, but the sun shines almost every day. The simple concept of this hotplate also works on other continents, because the sun as an alternative to fossil fuels is available free of charge everywhere.
  • Table cookers are mainly used to heat and keep food warm at the table, such as when preparing fondue . They can be operated with denatured alcohol, fuel paste or electrically. Tea lights are also sufficient to keep things warm.
  • The electric cooker finally is a small, transportable form of the electric oven with one or two burners.
  • The plant oil stove used as fuel vegetable oil and has been designed especially for use in developing countries and to replace such as petroleum there wood and fossil fuels.
  • The kettle embodies a different construction principle, since the container for the liquid to be heated is part of the device.
