The Kochersteg Wilhelmsglück is a twelve-tonne puddle steel bridge that was built in the 19th century for the workers of the Wilhelmsglück salt mine .

history

The Wilhelmsglück salt mine, which went into operation in 1823, was on the left side of the Kocher . The workers who had to cross the river used a wooden footbridge at Neumühle from 1824 . In 1845 this footbridge was relocated to the weir of the rock salt mill in Wilhelmsglück, when at the same time a passable bridge was built over the Kocher. However, the boardwalk was regularly threatened by floods and ice drifts and was destroyed several times by such natural events.

After the Kocherbrücke from 1845 had become dilapidated and a dispute broke out between the municipalities of Uttenhofen and Michelbach an der Bilz about the financing of the renovation, the administration of the salt works decided in 1879 to have a new footbridge built for the workers. However, the costs were also considered here: Production was dispensed with in the Wasseralfingen ironworks , the width was reduced from the initially planned 1.54 m to 1.20 m and a construction with simple façon iron bars was designed. This footbridge, a single-span spatial lattice girder, the puddle steel of which was manufactured between 1830 and 1860, was covered with wooden planks.

After the mine was shut down, its buildings were leased to the Gustav Werner Foundation in 1902 . Even then, the jetty was considered dangerous; however, there were again disputes about the renovation. The domain management refused to pay for a repair and instead demanded that Uttenhofen and Michelbach put up warning signs at each end of the footbridge to prevent passers-by from using the footbridge. Although the transition was seen as risky, the jetty remained accessible until the 1990s. From 1938 owned by the Diakonissenanstalt Schwäbisch Hall , the footbridge was used as part of the Albverein's long-distance hiking trail and as an access point to the Wilhelmsglück train station and was declared a technical cultural monument in 1997 . The Diakoniewerk sold him to the Rosengarten community in 2008. In 2010 the Wilhelmsglück Kochersteg was renovated.

Redevelopment

In order to be able to drive the flood plain with the necessary vehicles, road construction work had to be carried out first. The bridge was then lifted from its stone abutments with a truck crane, dismantled and brought into a hall, where corrosion protection was provided. After the steel parts had been removed, the abutments were refurbished and then the bridge was re-assembled on site and lifted back to its old location. It received a new top covering made of oak. The construction road was recently dismantled.
