Kofi Amponsah (born April 23, 1978 in Accra ) is a former Ghanaian football player on the position of a defender . He spent most of his career in Greece and Cyprus before ending his active career in the summer of 2009 at the age of 31.

Career

Player career

Amponsah began his career as a football player at the Ghanaian football club Ghapoha Readers from Tema , where he played in the professional team from 1997 to 1998. In 1999 Amponsah got an offer from the Greek football club AO Panelefsiniakos , which he accepted shortly afterwards. Amponsah ran for the club in 15 games in the 1998/99 season and scored one goal. In the same season he moved within Greece to Olympiacos Piraeus , for which he was used in ten games in the 1998/99 and 1999/2000 seasons. During the 1999/2000 season he transferred to PAOK Thessaloniki , where he was under contract until 2003. For the club he was on the field in 62 games and scored two goals. In 2004 Amponsah came to AEK Athens , for which he came in 20 completed championship games in the 2003/04 season and in the 2004/05 season. Again he moved in the middle of a season when he transferred to Egaleo AO Athens in the 2004/05 season , for which he was used a total of four times. This was followed by another change. This time he went to Apollon Kalamarias in the second Greek league, the Beta Ethniki . For Apollon he made 46 league appearances and two goals in the period from 2005 to 2008, before he moved back to the club in 2008, left Greece after almost ten years of active football and accepted a contract with Enosis Neon Paralimni in Cyprus . In July 2009, his contract was terminated. Then he ended his career.

International

His first tournament appearances for Ghana he completed at the U-20 World Cup in 1997 in Malaysia for the U-20 selection . From 1998 to 2007 Amponsah was in the squad of the Ghanaian national team at irregular intervals . In 2002 he took part in the African Championship in Cameroon and was used in all four games in Ghana.
