Kojima Zenzaburō ( Japanese 児 島 善 三郎 ; born February 13, 1893 in Fukuoka , Fukuoka Prefecture ; died March 22, 1962 ) was a Japanese painter of the Yōga direction during the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Kojima Zenzaburō was born in Fukuoka. He went to Tōkyō in 1913, and began studying painting at the private Hongō art school ( 本 郷 洋 画 研究所 , Hongō yōga kenkyūjo). However, he fell ill after a short time and had to return home. He then taught himself to paint to a large extent and was successful: his picture submitted to the Nika-kai ( 二 科 会 ) exhibition in 1921 was accepted. In the following year he even won the Nika-kai Prize.

In 1924 Kojima went to France to start studying painting all over again. He stayed in Paris until 1928. After his return he was able to see the pictures “Sonja, standing” ( 立 て る ソ ニ ア , Tateru Sonia ; 1927) and “Woman with a mirror” ( 鏡 を 持 つ 女 , Kagami , etc. ) as part of a special Nika-kai exhibition motsu onna ; 1928) show pictures that were taken in Europe. He then became a member of the Nika-kai. - In 1930 he left the Nika-kai and founded the "Association of Independent Art" ( 独立 美術 協会 , Dokuritsu bijutsu kyōkai ) together with Satomi Katsuzō , Hayashi Takeshi and others . He remained loyal to this association and exhibited there until his death.

Around 1935 Kojima's pictures were given an ornamental character, which resulted in a “Japanese” tone in his pictures. The result was colorful, decorative portraits, landscapes and still lifes. Examples are "Hakone" ( 箱根 , 1937), "Ostwind" ( 東風 , Tōfu ; 1939), "Weg in die Alpen" ( ア ル プ ス へ の 道 , Arupusu e no michi ; 1951) and the "flower vase" (full name: " Spierstrauch , Zantedeschien and Persian Jug" ( 雪柳 と 海芋 に 波斯 の 壺 , Yukiyanagi to kaiu ni Perusha no tsubo ; 1956)).
