Kōkaku
Emperor Kōkaku ( Japanese 光 格 天皇 , Kōkaku-tennō ; * September 23, 1771 , † December 11, 1840 ) was the 119th Tennō of Japan .
Life
His father was Prince Sukehito of the Imperial House Kan'in no miya ( 閑 院 宮 典 仁 親王 , Kan'in no miya Sukehito Shinnō ), who was descended from the Emperor Higashiyama . He wanted to give his father the title Daijō-tennō ( 太 政 天皇 ), synonymous with ex-emperor. The shogun did not like his idea, and a dispute broke out between the court and the shogunate.
In 1817 he abdicated in favor of his 17-year-old son Ninko. It was the last renunciation of the throne by a Japanese emperor up to that of Akihito, the 125th Tennō.
