Kolbus GmbH & Co. KG ( spelling KOLBUS ) is a German mechanical engineering group with headquarters in the East Westphalian town of Rahden in the Minden-Lübbecke district . The company was considered a world market leader in the construction of bookbinding machines, which also developed and manufactured complete inline production systems for the print processing industry. Since selling the bookbinding systems business to Muller Martini in January 2018, Kolbus has focused on machines for the production of book covers and packaging. Kolbus employed 1136 people in 2017. Consolidated sales in the 2017 financial year were 164 million euros.

history

The history of the company goes back to the year 1775, in which the farrier master and standard smith Christian Henrich Kolbus established a village blacksmith's shop . In 1900 August Kolbus Buchbindereimaschinen began to build the Rupert book rounding and pressing machine. In 1945 the plant was dismantled as a result of the Second World War . Reconstruction begins in 1947 with 35 employees. In 1962 the first fully automatic book production line is developed, with which 36 books can be produced per minute. In 2006 KOLBUS was awarded the 1st prize "Die Beste Fabrik OWL". In 2010, Kolbus took over Sigloch Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG, a manufacturer of bookbinding machines from Blaufelden . The bookbinding systems business area was completely sold to Muller Martini in 2018.

Sponsorship

In 2008, Kolbus took over a medium-term sponsorship of the Candide Prize . In 2011, however, there was a dispute between the sponsoring association and the company when the prize was to be awarded to Peter Handke . The company's managing director, Kai Büntemeyer, criticized the award that Handke was too famous and that this contradicted the fact that the award was dedicated to promoting authors. The chairman of the jury, Gerd Voswinkel, saw the sponsor's veto as a breach of contract and left the association. The board of the association stuck to the decision of the jury and only awarded the prize in non-material form without prize money.
