The Kollnau cotton spinning and weaving mill (KSW), also known as the "old KSW", is now a commercial area and industrial site in Kollnau , a district of Waldkirch im Breisgau in Baden-Württemberg . The KSW area includes several factory buildings, some of which are listed. Some of the old buildings were given a new use. Around 20 companies and institutions from a wide variety of industries have settled on the KSW site.

history

There used to be a grand-ducal ironworks on the site of the old KSW . This hammer mill was shut down in 1868 and a year later the Kollnauer cotton spinning & weaving AG was founded. The energy required provided the water power of the Elz . The active hydropower plant Kollnau still exists on the KSW site today . In 1870, the owners of KSW began building workers' apartments for the workforce. Between 1871 and 1900 several social institutions such as B. founded a school, a day nursery and a diakonia station. In 1901, the Denzlingen railway line to Waldkirch was expanded to Elzach , while a direct siding was laid in the factory yard. The transport costs for the company were considerably cheaper and 670 people could be employed. In the years 1909/1910 the weaving mill was enlarged with the acquisition of 150 automatic looms .

Due to the global economic crisis , several properties had to be sold in 1928. In 1930 the entire lock system was destroyed and the subsequent reconstruction weakened the KSW even more. In the same year, the processing of rayon was introduced in the weaving mill. In 1948 the workforce comprised only 576 employees. Since around half of all machines came from before the First World War, the weaving mill was expanded and modernized from 1950 to 1956. In the years that followed, the pressure on the entire textile industry increased due to foreign imports from countries in which it was possible to produce more cheaply. In 1980 KSW specialized in fashionable outerwear, mainly made of corduroy. Between 1984 and 1988 the demand for KSW's products decreased, mainly due to the failure of the largest purchaser of corduroy. As a result, bankruptcy proceedings were opened in 1988 , but current business was continued by a bankruptcy administrator. In 1989 KSW only had 165 employees. A rescue company was founded to reorganize the company: Kollnauer Weberei GmbH Waldkirch. Despite all efforts, the weaving mill was shut down in 1990. In 1991, DIBAG Industriebau AG took over the entire site, including all rights and real estate, and the sale of the factory buildings began.
