The Colombian woolly monkey ( Lagothrix lugens ) is a species of primate that lives in South America and belongs to the family of spider- tailed monkeys (Atelidae). It is one of the four species into which the woolly monkeys are divided in more recent classifications.

Colombian woolly monkeys are black-brown to grayish in color, the head, hands and feet as well as the tail are black. The fur is thick and woolly. The head is large and rounded, the ears are small. The animals reach a head body length of 51 to 69 centimeters, the tail is 60 to 72 centimeters longer than the body. He is muscular and trained as a prehensile tail.

These animals are only found in Colombia and possibly in neighboring areas of Venezuela . Their habitat are mountain forests up to 3000 meters above sea level.

Little is known about the way of life, presumably it corresponds to that of the other woolly monkeys . As a result, they are diurnal tree dwellers who climb slowly and skillfully through the branches. They live in mixed groups of 14 to 33 animals. Their main food is fruits, they also eat leaves, seeds and occasionally insects.

Distribution area

The main threat to this species is habitat destruction and hunting for its meat. The IUCN expects the total population to decline by 80% in the next 45 years and therefore lists the species as " critically endangered ".

In addition to the nominate form ( L. lugens lugens ), two other subspecies have been distinguished since 2013 ( L. lugens defleri and L. lugens sapiens ), which differ primarily in their fur color and occur in isolated mountain forests.
