history

Historical recording

In 1840 the Prussian Minister Christian Rother founded the Rother Foundation. This foundation was intended to provide shelter to unmarried daughters of officers and civil servants of old age. The headquarters of the foundation was previously located near Hallesches Tor on today's Mehringdamm (then: Belle-Alliance-Straße ). In the mid-1890s, the property on Mehringdamm was sold and the proceeds were so high that the three-hectare property in Groß-Lichterfelde could be bought. From 1896 to 1898 the building was erected on this property by the architect Alfred Kärner. The construction was carried out by the architects Reimarus and Hetzel. The building was inaugurated on October 5, 1898. The new building housed around 40 residents. Due to the inflation after the First World War, the foundation was forced to sell parts of the property.

On February 8, 1934, the Jewess Betti Kierski was accepted into the foundation. Due to the racial policy of the National Socialists , she had to leave the foundation on December 20, 1938. However, she continued to receive her pension until her suicide on September 26, 1942. On April 26, 2014, a stumbling block was laid in front of the property in remembrance .

After the Rother-Stift had to struggle with financial problems for years, the property was sold to the civil servants housing association in 2007. Today the old building and a modern new building are on the property.

The building, which has been a listed building since 1992, belongs to the brick Gothic style . Numerous ornaments such as friezes and arches typical of buildings of this style decorate the facade of the building. The old main building consists of three wings that are arranged like a semi-arch along Friedrichstrasse and Kommandantenstrasse. From the main wing, the entrance of which is on the corner of Friedrichstrasse and Kommandantenstrasse, two aisles lead off to the left and right, which connect the main wing with the two side wings.
