The Albert-Schultz-Hof is a community building in the Stadlau district of Vienna's 22nd district, Donaustadt .

history

In Red Vienna between the wars produced numerous municipal residential buildings, 32 of them beyond the Danube . At the site of today's Albert-Schultz-Hof there was originally a commune called Au on the banks of the then unregulated Danube. After the Danube regulation carried out from 1870 to 1875 , this area was suitable for building projects. At the beginning of the 20th century it was planned to divide the area enclosed by three streets into three parts and to build a public square in the northeastern part. At that time there was already a large leather factory north of Gumplowiczstrasse. After the original subdivision variant had been discarded, the residential complex was built in two sections from 1928 according to plans by the architect George Karau. The first component was released for use in 1929, the other in the following year. Since the Donaustadt district was not created until 1954, the residential complex was in the 21st district of Floridsdorf at the time of construction , where an old house number plate in a courtyard entrance with the inscription XXI. Conscription-No. 202 Stadlau remembers.

A youth home that was housed in the building was closed in 1934 and converted into apartments. In 1936, the parish of Kagran built a place of worship with a sacristy for 120 people in the premises of a day care center. In 2008 the community building, originally named after Archduke Karl, was renamed Albert-Schultz-Hof after Albert Schultz , the Donaustadt District Chairman, who died in 1993 . A general refurbishment of the building planned for 2013 has been delayed due to a tenant claim and is expected to be carried out from 2017 to 2020. Among other things, the roof is to be re-covered and 50 new attic apartments are to be built, new doors and windows are to be installed and the system is to be equipped with a thermal insulation composite system and connected to district heating .

General

Albert-Schultz-Hof is under monument protection ( list entry ) and is limited by the Archduke Charles Street, Gumplowiczstraße and Siebenbürgerstraße, and on the west, narrow corner by the only 50-meter Edmund-Weber way. The three- or four-storey building comprises 21 staircases, which, in an almost triangular, closed perimeter block development, enclose a large, park-like inner courtyard with a mighty plane tree in its center. The numbering of the stairs goes up to 22, however, because stair 20 is missing and there is now a municipal kindergarten in its place. On the Erzherzog-Karl-Straße there are several shops, including a second-hand boutique, a snack bar, a shop for animal feed and accessories, a nail salon, a glazier and a party club of the SPÖ Donaustadt. To the east of Siebenbürgerstrasse is another community building with 858 apartments, which was built between 1962 and 1964.

The dividing elements of the Albert-Schultz-Hof include the staircase towers and double loggias that are placed in front of the facade and extend over the entire height of the building. The originally preserved, sculpturally designed entrance doors to the stairwells are also architecturally interesting.
