Under civil aviation is understood

  1. land and sea-based aviation for civil purposes (e.g. passenger and freight transport, traffic and weather monitoring), or
  2. Research institutions and aircraft manufacturers that serve civil aviation.

Civil aviation contrasts with military aviation .

General aviation ( general aviation ) is called the largest by number of aviation equipment field of civil aviation. It includes all civil air traffic with the exception of scheduled and charter traffic with commercial aircraft operated by airlines . Flight operations that include the carriage of passengers , freight or mail for a fee are referred to as commercial air transport .

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) was founded to standardize the rules of civil aviation internationally . It issues recommendations and guidelines that are implemented by the member states - with occasional modifications. Even non-member states often follow these recommendations and guidelines.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the international organization of airlines.
