Commissioner Van der Valk is a British-Dutch-German co-production of a television crime series, remakes from 2019ff, the first three films of which were broadcast worldwide (many European countries, USA, Australia) in 2020.
The series of almost 90-minute crime novels, like the Van der Valk series decades earlier , is freely based on the crime novels by Nicolas Freeling about the Amsterdam homicide investigator Van der Valk . Marc Warren, known from many British action films and TV series, plays the title role . The commissioner's direct line manager is Superintendent Julia Dahlman. He is supported by a team made up of Inspector Lucienne Hassell and Sergeant Brad de Vries as well as the black detective assistant Job Cloovers, fresh from the academy and intellectually sparkling with theoretical expertise. Hassell is lesbian, lively and self-confident enough to defy the taciturn inspector, but mainly plays a balancing role in terms of group dynamics. De Vries is a disrespectful blasphemer and hedonistic , but reliable in his duties. In addition, the coroner Hendrik Davie is part of the team of investigators. The host of the bistro, in which the team meetings mostly take place, Cliff Palache, is also a constantly recurring person in the action. Piet Van der Valk lives on an old cutter in the Amsterdam harbor.
The filming locations were Amsterdam and the surrounding area and London in 2018 and 2019. The first three scripts were written by screenwriter Chris Murray, well-known from many works for the BBC . The direction changed with every film, from Colin Teague to Max Porcelijn to Jean van de Velde .
The first broadcast on ARD started on Whit Monday 2020, the other two on Sunday evenings on June 14 and 21. The FAZ reviewer wrote a condemnation because the scripts' attempt to be narrative unconventional and at the same time to tie in with the seventies seemed unsuccessful. Quota meters reported 2.86 million viewers for the Whit Monday pilot broadcast and thus 11.4 percent market share.
