Commission E

The Commission E means a separate, scientific expert committee for herbal medicines of the former Federal Health Office (BGA) and today's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) in Germany . This commission usually advises the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices on the approval of traditional drugs and drugs for special therapeutic directions.

Mission and history

From 1978 (when the new Drugs Act came into force ) to 1994, the task of Commission E was to collect and evaluate scientific and empirical material on the desired and undesirable effects of herbal medicinal products and the medicinal drugs used in them . From this, the monographs that are still valid today were created, which serve as the basis for the new approval and subsequent approval of herbal medicines. Today this task is performed more and more at the European level by the ESCOP .
