Max Wichtl

Max Wichtl (born October 6, 1925 in Vienna ; † July 30, 2019 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian professor of pharmacognosy .

Life and research

Max Wichtl studied chemistry and botany in Vienna and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He then studied pharmacy at the University of Vienna and graduated with a master's degree in pharmacy (Mag.pharm.). After his habilitation in pharmacognosy in 1965, he was a professor at the University of Vienna from 1971 and in 1973 took the chair for pharmacognosy at the Philipps University of Marburg , where he remained until his retirement in 1993. There he was director of the Institute for Pharmaceutical Biology .

In his scientific work he initially dealt with cardiac glycosides . Later he also turned to medicinal plants in general and the pharmaceutical and therapeutic quality of medicinal drugs. He has been a member of Committee E since it was founded in 1978, and was chairman of the Committee for Pharmaceutical Biology there from 1986 to 1992. He was co-editor of the Commentary on the European Pharmacopoeia from 1981 to 1999.

His best-known work is the book Wichtl - Teedrogen und Phytopharmaka: A manual for the practice , which he founded in 1984 (with the collaboration of Franz-Christian Czygan and others) and up to and including the 5th edition Also published in 2008. In the 6th edition in 2016, now edited by Wolfgang Blaschek , he was still involved as a co-author.

Others

Max Wichtl was an honorary member of the Society for Medicinal Plant Research , of which he was President and Vice-President several times, and since November 7, 2012 also an honorary member of the Austrian Society for Phytotherapy (ÖGPhyt). He was also a member of the Austrian, German and European pharmacopoeia commissions. As an enthusiastic musician, he gained fame in musical circles through his translation of the Mozart biography by the American musicologist Maynard Solomon .
