The Commission for Saarland State History (until 2013 Commission for Saarland State History and Folk Research ) is dedicated to researching the history of the Saarland and its neighboring regions. The historical research results are made available to the public through publications, colloquia and lectures.

Specialist historians as well as representatives of other disciplines, archivists and curators are appointed as members of the Commission for Saarland State History. In addition, the Commission is in professional exchange with scientists from Lorraine , Luxembourg and Rhineland-Palatinate . Numerous research projects are cross-border comparative studies that place the Saarland in the context of the history of the Greater Region and emphasize the common historical and cultural heritage.

Beginnings of the Commission

The Commission for Saarland State History was established in 1951 by Prime Minister Johannes Hoffmann as a state institution of the Saarland . Eugen Meyer , who had held a chair for the history of the Middle Ages at the newly founded University of Saarland since 1950 and was also director of the Ministry of Culture , was the initiator of this foundation and was its first chairman from 1952 to 1965. In 1965 Meyer was appointed honorary chairman of the commission. In the early days of the commission, up to 30 members were appointed by the Saarland state government "from among the scientific researchers in the field of Saarland regional history and folklore". The tasks of the board of directors were performed by a board of trustees.

In 1960 the Commission for Saarland State History was established as a registered association . Hans-Walter Herrmann , who took over the duties of managing director from 1960 to 1999 , earned special merits in continuous development work and the fulfillment of the various association tasks.

tasks

Compared to the early years of the Commission, several tasks have been delegated to other institutions over the years. For example, the Saarland Bibliography has been maintained by the Saarland University and State Library since 1996 .

The Commission for Saarland State History is currently concentrating on the following tasks:

  • Scientific research into the history and folklore of the Saarland and its neighboring landscapes
  • Publication of regional historical sources and representations
  • Organization of lectures, conferences and study trips
  • Elaboration of resolutions and recommendations on questions of regional history and Saarland's historical culture
  • Cooperation with other organizations with corresponding objectives

The work of the commission is not limited to the periods in which the Saar region was an independent state, but researches all epochs of the area from prehistory to the present. In terms of the study area, there are no territorial restrictions on the political boundaries of today's Saarland.

Members

The commission has full, corresponding and supporting members. The number of full members is currently 70. They are accepted at the proposal of the board by resolution of the general meeting. All members are invited by the chairman to the ordinary general assembly once a year. The general assembly elects the board of directors, receives the business report, makes decisions on the work plan, advises on the budget and determines the budget. In addition, the general assembly can change the statutes of the commission.

Board

The board consists of the chairman, the managing director, the deputy chairman and ten assessors, one of whom is sent by the state government. The chairman, the managing director and the deputy chairman form the executive board. The board works on a voluntary basis. Its resolutions are implemented by the full-time office manager.
