Rainer Hudemann

Rainer Hudemann (born July 6, 1948 in Heidelberg ) is a German historian .

Rainer Hudemann studied history, Romance studies and political science in Heidelberg , Kiel , Paris and Trier from 1967 to 1973 . In 1976 he received his doctorate in Trier on the development of the party system in the early Third Republic . His habilitation took place in Trier in 1984 with a thesis on social policy in the south-west of Germany between 1945 and 1953. From 1984 to 1985 he held a substitute professorship in Heidelberg. Since 1985 he has been a professor of modern and contemporary history with a focus on the entire field of Western European history at Saarland University . From 1992 to 1994 he was Vice President for Teaching and Studies at Saarland University. In 1995 he was visiting professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 1995/96 he was visiting professor at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris, where he held the Alfred Grosser chair. Further visiting professorships at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris followed in 1999 and 2002. From 2009 to 2010 he was head of the France Center at Saarland University. Since September 2010 he has been teaching as Professeur d'Histoire contemporaine de l'Allemagne et des pays germaniques (Modern History of Germany and the German-speaking Countries) at the University of Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) . At the same time, he continued to teach as a professor at Saarland University until his retirement in 2013.

His work focuses on German and French history in the 19th and 20th centuries, Franco-German relations, the history of the elites in France and Germany, party history, history of social policy, fascisms in Europe, history of European integration, urban history in European comparison, structures of Transfer processes in Europe, history of the Saarland .

Hudemann was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Metz in October 1998 . In February 2002 he was awarded Officier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques, one of the highest honors for services to the French education system. In July 2005 he became Officier de l'Ordre National du Mérite , in July 2013 Commandeur dans l ' Ordre des Palmes Académiques .
