The Kommunal (original spelling : KOMMUNAL ) is a monthly, non-partisan specialist magazine and is aimed at Austrian municipalities. The magazine was first published in its earliest form in 1989. The Österreichische Kommunal-Verlag GmbH (alternative spelling: Kommunalverlag ) and the Austrian Association of Municipalities work together to design the content . The media owner is the Österreichische Kommunal-Verlag.

history

The desire for a trade journal for the municipalities and an exchange of experiences was formulated in Austria in 1948 by the Secretary General of the Association of Municipalities, Alfred Sponner . A first attempt was made in 1963 with the Austrian municipality of Rundschau to meet this request. The sporadic publication dates of the Rundschau did not meet the information needs of the association of municipalities. This need became particularly clear when the Austrian Association of Municipalities was anchored in the Federal Constitution of 1988 ( Art. 115 Para. 3 ). On January 24, 1989, the board of directors of the association of municipalities decided to publish its own newspaper, which was initially called the communal journal . The first publisher was the journalist Karl-Heinz Richter and the first edition appeared in March 1989. In May 1989, the communal journal comprised 32 pages and had a checked circulation of 10,000 copies.

After the death of Richter in 1993, Walter Zimper took over the magazine of the association of municipalities with the ZeitschriftenverlagsgmbH , which was published under the name Kommunal-Magazin from that time on . The dominant topic in the following years was Austria's accession to the EU . In 1994 the controlled circulation was 13,500 copies. The communal fair was held for the first time in 1995 and continues to accompany the communal day today.

In 1996 the publisher founded a branch in Vienna, which is now the company's headquarters. The headquarters are in Löwelstrasse in Palais Montenuovo , right next to the Federal Chancellery . The association of municipalities is now in the same building. A relaunch took place in 1997 and the ÖAK had a circulation of 30,000. In the same year, Hans Braun took over the editorial office. To this day he is editor-in-chief of the trade magazine.

In 1996 a daily special edition was established on the occasion of the annual community day, which accompanies the event to this day. In 1997 the current name Kommunal (original spelling : KOMMUNAL ) was introduced and the magazine has been published on a monthly basis ever since. In 1999 the municipality started its first online presence.

In 2003 the then Federal President Thomas Klestil awarded Walter Zimper the honorary title of "Professor" for the establishment of a "qualitative local press ".

In 2008 Walter Zimper, the head of the local authority for many years, died. The eldest son Walter took over the municipal publishing house, which he had already worked on in previous years. In 2009 the 150th edition of the Kommunal was published. In 2010 Walter Zimper Jun. Died and the management of the publishing house was taken over by Michael Zimper. In 2010, the Austrian circulation control documented a circulation number of more than 35,000 copies per month.

In 2013 the Kommunal-Verlag introduced an innovation award called Impulse (original spelling : IMPULS ) for the Austrian municipalities. In the fall of 2014, the local authority's online presence was redesigned.

Expansion to Germany

In 2015 the publisher expanded to Germany. Kommunal Deutschland , which is almost identical in structure, can be described as the sister magazine of Kommunal Österreich . In cooperation with the German Association of Cities and Towns , the magazine is produced by Zimper Media GmbH, based in Berlin .

target group

The local authority serves as an information tool for mayors , deputy mayors, executive councilors , office managers , treasurers, building yard managers and water managers .
