In Baden-Württemberg , in accordance with Section 1 of the Local Election Act of Baden-Württemberg (KomWG), local elections are held

The mayor or lord mayor is elected as head of administration for eight years, a new election due to resignation, retirement or the like rarely coincides with the municipal elections every five years.

In addition, the Local Election Act applies to

  • consultation of citizens in the event of border changes
  • the application for a citizens' meeting
  • the citizen application
  • the referendum
  • the implementation of the referendum.

The district administrators in Baden-Württemberg are not elected by the people, but by the district assemblies of the districts .

The last local elections in Baden-Württemberg took place on May 26, 2019 at the same time as the 2019 European elections in Germany. The minimum age for voting rights has been reduced from 18 to 16 years.
