Accomplices of the rules of the game are a band from Cologne, which combines elements from post-punk , krautrock , indietronic and pop with German lyrics.
The band name “Accomplices of the rules of the game” comes from the work “ Stiller ” by Max Frisch and, in the conception of their music, serves as a thematic heading for systemic and multi-perspective observations of the individual, society and pop culture.
history
At the beginning of 2004 a nameless dub noise project started in the Cologne area. Through instrumental replacement and the addition of the singer Tobias Ortmanns, US-influenced indie rock with German lyrics developed under the name “accomplices of the rules of the game”. The first EP , Share on Daily Needs , was recorded in 2004 and distributed itself.
In 2007 the actual history of the band began with Tobias Ortmanns (voice), Volker Weide (guitar), Julien Paoli (drums), Christian Puckert (guitar) and Frank Nagel (bass). Accomplices of the rules of the game played numerous national and international concerts and recorded two albums together with the Austrian producer Hannes Jaeckl in the Temple Studios on the island of Malta. The results are called Es wird nur geatmet (2009) and Lieder vom Rio d'Oro (2011) and appeared on the Cologne label Sitzer Records , distributed by Broken Silence . These two albums attracted media attention. In 2009, the band released the remix album Geatmet: ES , which was created with Cologne-based electro laptop artists. The idea of a live concert remixing event developed in joint sessions, which was also implemented and documented in 2010 under the name Geatmet: ES as part of c / o pop . In May 2011, the song version from the album Lieder vom Rio d'Oro was voted into the top 10 best German-language protest songs by Spex magazine .
After the album Lieder vom Rio d'Oro , the band increasingly integrated electronic elements with a penchant for noise and analog effects. The intro attested "(...) art with a concept, without being faced with conceptual art at the end." Since 2013, the project has been continued with a different line-up under the name of "complizen_DS". In 2016 the band released the double EP "America, get me out of here" under the name of accomplices of the rules of the game and went on tour.
In 2017, together with producer Hannes Jaeckl, the next record will be made in Cologne and Graz, which will be released on vinyl and digitally in autumn 2019.
style
With their debut Es wird nur geatmet (2009) the band positions itself in the indie rock sector somewhere between Sonic Youth , Goldene Zitronen and the early Blumfeld and polarized there with their unconventional manner, especially in German-speaking countries, with words and musical patterns to play. In its expression, the band works with irritations and the confrontation of everyday roles and perceptions. The texts follow non-linear narrative structures and their effect is often associative and cryptic. Again and again, in the sense of self-referentiality , one's own person and role are explicitly thematized and questioned. The listener is thus confronted with questions about identity and meaningfulness that go beyond the mere socially critical denunciation of circumstances. By adding electronic elements, a sound is manifested that consciously explores and crosses borders. Despite all the supposed intricacies, it is essentially about pop music, even if the band interprets this pop thing more organically and freely. As a result, accomplices of the rules of the game can hardly be assigned to an existing genre and claim their own niche.

The band performed live together with the video artist Schaupau, who was an integral part of the band from 2010 to 2016. The band has been performing as a trio since 2016 and integrating live looping as an audio-visual element into their stage show. The band has played numerous concerts in Germany, Austria and Italy so far. Accomplices of the rules of the game Concerts ensure open mouths and the feeling of being addressed to the core. Singer, lyricist and front man Tobias Ortmanns fascinates and irritates the audience with his intense performance and pulls them under its spell. There is singing, speaking, moderating, shouting, thinking outside the box, sweating, rocking and experiencing every single song. The sight of this energetic live performance can hide the fact that we are essentially dealing with electronic music. Electronic fiddling, squeaky synths, pads, a preference for special sounds, lots of beat and unconventional songwriting characterize the band's musical output. In terms of energy, the band can easily compete with any rock act.
