The Komsomolets Island ( Russian остров Комсомолец ) is the northernmost and third largest island of the Russian Severnaya Zemlya Archipelago in the Arctic Ocean . The approximately 9,000 km² island is about 65% glaciated and reaches a maximum height of 780 m. The island was first explored and named by an expedition led by Georgi Ushakow and Nikolai Urwanzew .

An initiative to rename the island to St. Mary (Святая Мария) and the archipelago in Nicholas II Land (Земля Императора Николая II) failed in 2007 because of rejection by the regional parliament of the Krasnoyarsk region .

Cape Arctic is the northernmost point of the island .
