The Sedov Islands , also called Sedov Archipelago ( Russian архипелаг Седова , scientific transliteration archipelag Sedova ) are a small group of islands in the west of the Severnaya-Zemlya Archipelago in the Russian Arctic .

All of the uninhabited, mostly ice-covered islands of the group are located about 25 kilometers south of the coast of Pioneer Island and about five kilometers from the first foothills of the October Revolution Islands . They form a chain of islands about 50 kilometers long in the Kara Sea .

The archipelago includes around ten small islands, u. a. the

The Sedov Islands were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and completely mapped between 1930 and 1932 by geologists Georgi Alexejewitsch Uschakow and Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Urwanzew , who set up the base station for their expedition to explore Severnaya Zemlyas on Domaschni Island. After another expedition in 1937 with the icebreaker Georgi Sedow ( Георгий Седов ) the archipelago was named after the Russian polar explorer and namesake of the research vessel Georgi Jakowlewitsch Sedov . In the 1950s, a meteorological research station was built on Golomjanny Island and is still in operation today.

In September 2015, Russia announced that it would establish a military base on Sredni Island.
