Urwanzew was one of those geologists who, during an expedition from 1919 to 1922, found mineral resources in the vicinity of the city ​​of Norilsk, which was established by the Politburo of the CPSU in 1935 on the basis of this discovery . From 1930 to 1932 he explored the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago together with the Soviet geographer Georgi Alexejewitsch Ushakow . In doing so, they discovered some new islands. Urwanzew completed his habilitation in 1935 in the field of geology and mineralogy. He also went on expeditions to the Taimyr Peninsula and the Central Siberian Mountains .

During Stalinism , Urwanzew was falsely accused of sabotage and locked twice in the Gulag , once in the well-known correctional and labor camp NorilLag . His complete rehabilitation took place in 1954 after Stalin's death. Urwanzew, who later held a chair in Arctic geology, was honored with numerous honors, including the Order of Lenin and the Przewalski Gold Medal of the Russian Geographical Society . The Urvantsev Rocks in the Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains of the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land are named after him.
