The Konak Mosque ( Turkish Konak Camii ), also called Yalı Mosque (tr. Konak Camii ), is a mosque in the Konak district of the Turkish metropolis of Izmir . It is located on Konak Square next to the clock tower built in 1901 .
history
Construction of the Konak Mosque began in 1755 and lasted 19 years; It was opened in 1774. Who commissioned the building is controversial. It is said to have been Ayşe Hanım, the wife of Katipzade Mehmet Paşa , who ruled Izmir at the time. After the First World War , individual stones in the mosque had to be replaced in some places.
Origin of name
The name is derived from the location of the mosque: Summer villas on the bank are called Yalı ; the Konak Mosque is located on the Gulf of Izmir and is about 200 meters from the Turkish Aegean coast . The alternative name Konak Mosque goes back to the district in which the mosque is located. Another, albeit rarer, name is İngiliz Ayşe Camii . Ingiliz means English ; This addition is based on the fact that Ayşe Hanım is said to have close ties to English acquaintances.
architecture
The Konak Mosque is a building of classical Ottoman architecture . It was built in the shape of a hexagon and the windows were surrounded with colored tiles. The mosque has a minaret .
