Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten (KVAB) (English Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts ), (German Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts ) is the name of the Academy of Sciences in Flanders . The purpose of the association is to promote science and art in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. It is thus the counterpart to the French-speaking Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique (ARB). The KVAB, like the ARB and the RASAB, is based in the Brussels Palace of the Academies, not far from Warandepark . KVAB and ARB emerged from the national academy, which was abolished in 1971. However, since 2001 the two successor academies have been running a joint, English-language cooperation department at Hertogsstraat 1 Rue Ducale B-1000 Brussels , which is called RASAB ( The Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium ) and is responsible for the international coordination of Belgian interests responsible for.

history

The Palace of the Academies in Brussels

The academy's beginnings go back to 1769, when Empress Maria Theresa gave her consent to the establishment of a “Literary Society” in Brussels. The actual academy (as Keizerlijke en Koninklijke Academie voor Wetenschappen en Letteren van Brussel , which is the current Dutch-language name of the institution at the time) was not established until 1772.

As a result of the Belgian state reform of 1970, the formerly officially bilingual national organization " Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium " was finally abolished in 1971 and replaced by two successor organizations. On the one hand by the Dutch- speaking Koninklijke Academie voor Wetenschappen, Letteren en Schone Kunsten (KAWLSK) and on the other hand by the French-speaking Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique (ARB) . Both organizations were allowed to regard themselves as equal successors to the original "Imperial and Royal Academy" founded by Maria Theresa in 1772, the so-called Theresian Academy (Academia Theresiana).

In 1999, the Dutch-speaking organization changed its name to the form in use today: Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten van België (KVAB). In 2009 the fourth department of technical sciences was finally founded.

The KVAB is divided into four departments ( called classes ):

  • kunsten (Fine Art)

The center awards 10 to 20 Academy Award Fellowships each year .
