Konrad Duden (lawyer)

Konrad Duden (born September 4, 1907 in Messina , Italy ; † May 15, 1979 ) was a German law scholar and professor at the University of Mannheim .

Life

Duden was the grandson of Konrad Duden and the son of a merchant working in Italy. The family later moved to Holstein , where Duden graduated from the Matthias-Claudius-Gymnasium in Wandsbek in 1926 . He then studied first at the University of Hamburg , later also at the Universities of Cologne , Vienna and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . In Berlin he passed his first state examination and received his doctorate in 1934. iur. He then worked as a speaker at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Berlin and as an assistant to Ernst Rabel and Martin Wolff . In 1937 he moved to the legal department of Schering AG , where he worked until he was called up for military service. After being wounded, Duden married Julius Curtius' daughter during the war .

After the end of the war and a short American captivity, Duden moved to Heidelberg, where from 1946 he worked for the newly founded business consultant , a magazine for commercial law. In 1949 he founded his own law firm in Mannheim. As a lawyer, Duden dealt with the Feldmühle decision of the Federal Constitutional Court, among other things . From 1954 he also held regular teaching positions at the University of Heidelberg , which later appointed him honorary professor . Duden was one of the founding professors of the University of Mannheim in 1967, where he acted as the first dean of the law faculty there and thus played a key role in the development of the faculty and the appointment of the teaching staff. Until his retirement he also taught in Mannheim as a professor for comparative commercial law. From 1962 to 1971 Duden also sat for the SPD on the Heidelberg municipal council.
