Hans Martin Pawlowski

Hans Martin Pawlowski (born October 30, 1931 in Bochum ; † March 14, 2016 in Düsseldorf ) was a German legal scholar .

From 1951 Pawlowski studied law , theology and philosophy in Münster , Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich . In 1960 he received his doctorate with Karl Michaelis in Göttingen on the subject of "Legal ownership in current property and intellectual property law", in 1964 his habilitation for the subjects of civil law , civil litigation and legal philosophy on the subject of the legal consequences of void declarations of intent. In 1966 he became a full professor for civil law and civil procedural law at the then business school and today's University of Mannheim. 1969/1970 Pawlowski was rector of the University of Mannheim . From 1973 to 1990 he was a member of the Social Science Institute at the University of Mannheim, from 1987 to 1994 a member of the board of the Research Center for Social Development (FGE) at the University of Mannheim. His academic students included Wolfgang Böhm, Uwe John , Johann Braun , Stefan Smid and Volker Lipp.

The main research areas included problems of contract theory and representation as well as the Europeanization of private law; Problems of family structure and the right to care ; Problems of the impartiality of the judge and the delimitation of jurisdiction and administration; The problem of the prerequisites for a pluralistic state that legitimizes itself by guaranteeing freedom of belief and therefore regards all world views represented in it as equal; Problems of legal methodology. Pawlowski was best known for his textbook on civil law and his books on legal methodology . This, as well as the legal philosophy, was his greatest interest and commitment. Even after his retirement, Pawlowski still held lectures and seminars on legal philosophy and methodology. Pawlowski was Protestant and was at times active in the Union's Evangelical Working Group.
