Konrad Anton Reinhart (born October 26, 1947 in Bamberg ) is a German anesthetist and intensive care doctor . From 1993 to 2016 he was Director of the Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy at the University Hospital of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . Now he is Senior Professor at the Jena University Hospital, BIH Visiting Professor at the Charité Foundation and Senior Professor at the Charité University Medicine, Berlin. Reinhart is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina , founding president of the German Sepsis Society and the Global Sepsis Alliance.

Career

Konrad Reinhart studied from 1969 to 1972 at the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich and from 1972 to 1975 at the Free University of Berlin human medicine . After working as a medical assistant in departments for internal medicine, neurology and surgery, he was an assistant surgeon at the Evangelical Forest Hospital in Berlin from 1976 to 1977 and in the urology department of the Franziskus Hospital in Berlin from 1977 to 1978. From 1978 to 1982 he completed further training as a specialist in anesthesiology at the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine at the Free University of Berlin with Klaus Eyrich.

In 1978 Reinhart received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin and qualified as a professor in 1984 in anesthesiology. From 1982 to 1985 he was senior physician at the Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Free University of Berlin and there from 1985 to 1987 senior physician in charge of the operative intensive care unit at the Steglitz Clinic. From 1988 to 1989 he was Visitung Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA. In 1989 he was appointed adjunct professor at the Free University of Berlin. In 1993 he was appointed C3 professor and then appointed to the chair for anesthesiology and intensive therapy at the University Clinic of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, where he became director of the local clinic for anesthesiology and intensive therapy.

Research and activities

With over 68,000 citations and an H index of 109, Reinhart is one of the world's most cited sepsis researchers. Research focuses on epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of sepsis. As the initiator of the German Sepsis Society (2001), the Competence Network SepNet (2001), the Center for Sepsis Control and Care (2008), the Sepsis Foundation (2012), the German Sepsis Quality Alliance (2012) and a memorandum for a national Sepsisplan, Reinhart has made a significant contribution to increasing awareness in Germany of the previously underestimated medical and health economic importance of sepsis. As a co-initiator of the Global Sepsis Alliance (2010), initiator for the 1st World Sepsis Day and a World Sepsis Declaration 2012 as well as the 1st World Sepsis Congress 2016, Reinhart played a key role in ensuring that the World Health Assembly passed the resolution “Improving the prevention, diagnosis and clinical management of sepsis ". The WHO has thus given sepsis a high priority on a global level.
