Konstanty Borzęcki (also Mustafa Celâleddin Paşa , born April 10, 1826 in Modrzewiec, Congress Poland ; † October 9, 1876 , Novo Selo, Montenegro ) was a Polish revolutionary and Ottoman general, cartographer and publicist.

Life

In 1848 he took part in the Wielkopolska Uprising . Then he had to emigrate from Prussia . He went to Hungary , where he again took part in the war against the Habsburgs . After the Hungarians lost the war, he emigrated to the Ottoman Empire , where he converted to Islam and became a member of the General Staff. Then he changed his name to Mustafa Celâleddin.

In Turkey he wrote Les Turcs anciens et modern in French , in which he argued that the ancient Turks were Aryan ; thus the modern Turks should be counted among the European nations. Later this was one of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's most popular books : a copy with his personal notes is kept in Turkey.

Konstanty Borzęcki was killed in battle with the Montenegrins in 1876 and buried in Albania . His great-grandson was the Turkish poet Nâzım Hikmet .
