Contoid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A contoid (also: Kontoid ) is a consonant , non- vowel sound . In his terminology, Kenneth Pike differentiates between contoid and vocoid speech sounds.

The contoids are divided into extendable contoids ( nasals , liquids , fricatives ) and non-extendable contoids ( plosives ). Another differentiation is the subdivision into syllabic (can act as a syllable nucleus ) and non-syllabic contonoids .

background

From an articulatory point of view, the contoid is at least a fricative formation in the vocal tract (attachment tube).
