The concert and theater hall (KTS) in Nordhorn

The concert and theater hall (KTS) on Ootmarsumer Weg, together with the old weaving mill, forms the Nordhorn cultural center .

The building was built according to the plans of the Nordhorn architect Werner Zobel and was intended to set architectural standards across the region. The foundation stone was laid in December 1956; on April 11, 1958, the building was handed over to the city as the "House of Art".

The artistic redesign of the foyer from 1998 comes from Ernst Caramelle . Timm Ulrichs ' granite sculpture "The Findling" has stood on the forecourt since 1981 .

The house with its mosaic and marble facade and the artistic interior design is a listed building .

history

From 1935 the “Kriegerhalle”, which dates back to the imperial era, on Kriegerstrasse and the corner of Neuenhauser Strasse was used as a cultural hall and theater venue. It could hold up to 550 visitors, but was technically and structurally outdated from the start, so that after the Second World War at the latest, the call for a new hall grew stronger and stronger. At the same time, the building served as an auditorium and event space for the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Realschule (which was still called "Mittelschule" at the time) on the corner of Taunusstrasse and Ootmarsumer Weg .

The architect Werner Zobel attached particular importance to optimal acoustics in the new festival and theater space to be built on Ootmarsumer Weg . After the laying of the foundation stone in December 1956, the building was completed in a construction period of 16 months. The estimated construction costs of 3.2 million German marks were met. The opening event took place in June 1958 with festive performances of Verdi's La traviata and Lorca's Blood Wedding .

The concert and theater hall was initially called the "House of Art" and was supposed to be a house of all the arts. While the house was used purely as a performance venue in its initial phase and was also home to the Städtische Galerie Nordhorn until 1999 (which then moved to the Alte Weberei), temporary exhibitions of various genres as well as conferences and panel discussions are now held there.

The program initially only included music theater , opera and operetta ; in the first half of the 1960s came straight theater added. The opera disappeared over time due to a lack of public interest. Now special events from the fields of operetta, ballet and musicals have also been added.

In the mid-1950s, the so-called blind concerts were launched and took place annually on Memorial Day in the Warrior Hall. After the inauguration of the KTS, they took place there until 1969.

Facade detail with rust-prone mosaics

Up until the 1970s , almost all of the house's events were fully booked. At that time the hall still had over 700 seats. As the number of spectators steadily declined, the council decided in 2000 to fundamentally renovate the building in order to bring the technology up to date and to increase the seating comfort in the hall. The seats have been reduced to 470, the foyers including restaurants and artists' cloakrooms have been modernized, and the forecourt has been redesigned. In the end, however, there was no major work on the technology.

The artist Ernst Caramelle was able to be won over for the design of the control room ("art cube"); in 1998 he had already designed the interior walls of the foyer areas with flat color elements. This interior design became part of the kunstwegen project.

The premiere on December 2, 2002 for the original inauguration of the renovation, which was typically the musical "Crash" by Thomas Kriegisch in a production by Horst Gross, had to be canceled after an hour due to problems with the outdated building technology . Subsequently, in an additional construction phase, the electrical engineering systems of the house were brought up to date.

A total of around two million euros went into the basic KTS renovation. For more than 340,000 euros, the individual elements of the facade were dismantled, cleaned and re-anchored. The rust-prone mosaics on the sides of the KTS, which at the time were specially designed for the facade by art students, were cleaned and repaired while maintaining their original condition and some were given a new coat of paint.

After the renovation work was completed in 2007, the house continued to look like it was 50 years ago. The Nordhorn Building Department was in charge of the renovation .

"The boulder"

"The Foundling" by Timm Ulrichs

After an art campaign on May 2, 1981, when Ulrichs let himself be locked inside a divided granite stone for ten hours, the sculpture became an integral part of the theater forecourt, was art station number 1 on the former sculpture trail and is part of "kunstwege".

Ulrichs had discovered the granite stone the year before during his stay in Nordhorn, when, as an art award winner from the city of Nordhorn in 1980, he had spent a few weeks in the artist's house in the city park.

In 2009, “Der Findling” became the property of the city for the symbolic amount of 1,500 euros.
