Jacobus Eye "Koos" Andriessen (born July 25, 1928 in Rotterdam ; † January 22, 2019 ) was a Dutch economist , university professor and politician at the Christelijk-Historische Unie (CHU) and later the Christian Democratisch Appèl (CDA), who from 1963 until 1965 Minister of Economics in the cabinet of Prime Minister Victor Marijnen and thus the youngest member of the cabinet. This led to a dispute between him and Foreign Minister Joseph Luns over who was responsible for trade policy . After leaving the government, he switched to business and was later chairman of the Christian employers' association.

In the third cabinet of Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers, he again held the office of Minister of Economics between 1989 and 1994, defending in particular the interests of companies.

Life

Studies, civil servant and university professor

Andriessen, son of a businessman, began studying economics at the Netherlands Economische Hogeschool in September 1946 after attending the Christian Higher Civic School in Rotterdam-Nord and graduated cum laude on February 1, 1951. He then worked between 1951 and September 1955 as the head of the Economic Sociological Institute at the Free University of Amsterdam , where he completed his doctorate in economics on June 24, 1955 with the dissertation De ontwikkeling van de modern prijstheorie for the development of modern price theory also “cum laude ”. After his original doctoral supervisor Jelle Zijlstra became Minister of Economic Affairs in 1952, the doctorate was supervised by F. de Roos.

In September 1955, Andriessen von Zijlstra was brought to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, where he initially assumed the position of head of the department for parliamentary and financial affairs until September 1, 1959, and then as head of the department for from September 1 to 15, 1959 general economic policy.

Subsequently, Andriessen accepted a professorship for economics at the University of Amsterdam on September 15, 1959 and taught there until August 1, 1963. Between 1962 and July 1963 he also worked as an economic policy advisor to the head of the general department Economic policy in the Ministry of Economic Affairs. For his services he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion on April 20, 1963 .

Economics minister, business manager and employer president

On July 24, 1963, Andriessen was appointed by Prime Minister Victor Marijnen himself as Minister of Economics (Minister van Economische Zaken) in his cabinet and held this office until April 14, 1965. He became the youngest member of the cabinet for almost 35 years. During the term of office there was a dispute with Foreign Minister Joseph Luns over who was responsible for trade policy.

After leaving the government, he was a member of the board of directors of the packaging company NV Koninklijke Emballage Industrie Van Leer from October 1, 1965 to 1980, and then from 1980 to September 1987 chairman of the board of this company, which was founded in 1919 and was last named Van Leer Industrial Packaging . In 1988 he became chairman of the Dutch Christian Employers' Association NCW (Nederlands Christelijk Werkgeversverbond) and held this position until November 6, 1989.

On November 7, 1989, Andriessen was reappointed Minister of Economics by Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers and held this ministerial office in the third Lubbers cabinet until August 22, 1994. During his tenure, he particularly defended the interests of companies. After Hanja Maij-Weggen became a member of the European Parliament , he also held the office of Minister for Transport and Water Management (Minister van Verkeer en Waterstaat) from July 16 to August 22, 1994 .

After leaving the government, Andriessen was appointed commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau on October 8, 1994 .

He died on January 22, 2019.
