Kornel Filipowicz (born October 27, 1913 in Tarnopol , Austria-Hungary , † February 28, 1990 in Cracow ) was a Polish writer , screenwriter and poet.

Life

Filipowicz was born on October 27, 1913 in Tarnopol (then Austria-Hungary, from 1918 Poland, now Ukraine). He graduated from high school in mathematics and science in Teschen . In 1933 he began studying biology in Cracow.

In the years 1936–1939 he worked in the editorial department of the anti-fascist, avant-garde magazine Our Expression (Naszy Wyraz) , which mainly dealt with literature.

Filipowicz became a soldier in 1939, fell into German captivity and was able to flee from there. He managed to remain undetected until 1943. During this time he worked in quarries, an antiquarian bookshop and a construction office and always stayed in close contact with a group of left-wing Polish intelligentsia.

In the spring of 1944 he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned first in Cracow and later in the concentration camps Groß-Rosen and Sachsenhausen .

After the end of the war he lived in Kraków as a writer. He was married to the painter Maria Jarema (1908–1958). From the late 1960s he was in a relationship with the poet Wisława Szymborska until his death .
