The Kornhaus in Einbeck , Lower Saxony, is a six-storey storage building built in 1898 , which is now a listed building and has been used as part of the PS-Speicher transport museum since 2014 .

Building history

For several centuries, Einbeck has been the central transshipment point for grain in the formerly Brunswick , then Prussian Hanoverian region because of the beer brewing industry located here . In 1890 there was already a granary at the Ostertor of the Einbeck city fortifications .

After cooperatives and granaries were promoted by the Prussian granary laws, the general assembly of the agricultural cooperative took place in Einbeck on May 10, 1897. It was decided to build a granary with a siding to the Ilmebahn near the Tiedexer Tor .

The first owner was the Prussian state railways , which leased it to the cooperative. In 1914 the cooperative ( KORNHAUS eGmbH ) acquired the building for 65,000 marks and expanded it on the north side with a four-storey extension of similar storage capacity, which however collapsed on September 13, 1933 due to structural defects and was rebuilt in 1934. In 1947 a scale with a weighing housing was added.

Usage history

20th century

The grain was carried into the attic house via elevators and from there distributed to the four-aisled wooden bulk floor structures below. With a dump height of half a meter per floor, the total capacity of the granary was 1000 tons .

In the decades after the Second World War , in addition to a silo from the 1960s, the old bulk floors were also used. a. also for feed and seed processing. Ultimately, newer storage facilities such as those of the Kornhaus in Markoldendorf or the silos of private producer groups such as in Hoppensen proved to be better suited for regional grain storage. The Einbeck Kornhaus later changed hands several times and included an agricultural machinery trade with a workshop, a coal and land trade and a gas station. At times it was unused.

21st century

From 2012 to 2014 the Kornhaus was restored in accordance with the listed building standards. Since then it has been operated by the Kornhaus Cultural Foundation as part of the PS.SPEICHER Museum. There is also an exhibition on the history of the grain trade. The roof terrace and the silo tower are the branch offices of the city's registry office.

architecture

The six-story, 20 m long, 27 m high and 16 m wide building uses brick as an essential structural element and is therefore based on the architectural style coined by Conrad Wilhelm Hase . It has internal wooden structures. A loading ramp is attached to the side. The main building was built in 1898/99 and cost around 125,000 marks . The silo house and roof terrace form the upper end. Special design elements of the facade are two-tone bricks and crenellated display gables.

In 1978 the ensemble was placed under monument protection.
