Kornplatz (Chur)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kornplatz

The Kornplatz is a major traffic-free square south of the post office in the middle of Chur's Old Town . Its previous name was Klosterplatz , named after the former Dominican monastery of St. Nicolai in the north . The name was changed around 1672 with the abolition of the monastery and the creation of granaries . In 1827/28 the choir polygon, side chapel and church tower of the monastery were demolished and the administrative building was built, which today borders Kornplatz in the north. The architect was Karl David Lindenmayer.

The granary ceased to exist in 1840 after the city monopoly was given up , only the name of the square has been retained.

Kornplatz has not served as a marketplace since the 20th century; today it is seen in urban planning as a link between old and new towns. At house number 2 there are facade paintings by Alois Carigiet from 1955. It was renovated in 2017 for the last time.

In the Swiss version of the game Monopoly , Kornplatz is the cheapest place.
