Kosmos 557 was the third civil space station (DOS 3) of the Soviet Union .
The space station was launched into Earth orbit on May 11, 1973 at 0:20 UTC from the Baikonur Cosmodrome with a Proton rocket . The height of the orbit was between 218 and 266 kilometers with a slope of 51.6 degrees. However, Kosmos 557 could not be stabilized in orbit because the command transfer was unsuccessful. After just eleven days, it burned up over the Pacific on May 22, 1973. That is why it was only given a camouflage name for the Kosmos series . In the event of a successful launch, the station would have been given a Salyut designation.
