Kosrae is a state of the Federated States of Micronesia . In addition to the main island of Kosrae, it also includes the island of Lelu and about seven much smaller islands, all of which are close to the coast within the fringing reef: Kiul (Gabert), Mutunyal, Sroansak, Srukames, Yen Yen , Yenasr and the airport island .

Kosrae is the easternmost part of the Federated States of Micronesia. To the west, the area borders on the Micronesian state of Pohnpei . The area is 110 km², 98% of which is on the main island of Kosrae .
Kosrae Airport is located on an artificial island off the northwest coast .
history
On May 10, 1979, Kosrae ratified the Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia and became an integral part of this nation with official independence on November 3, 1986.
Administrative division
The state of Kosrae is divided into four municipalities (municipalities). Of the originally five municipalities in 1980, Walung was incorporated into Tafunsak in the 1980s.

The main town of the state of Kosrae is Tofol in the municipality of Lelu, located on the northeast coast of the island of Kosrae.
Originally , five parishes were formed in 1977 when Kosrae parish was separated from Pohnpei . The fifth municipality, Walung, was by far the smallest municipality with 151 inhabitants (1980) and was later incorporated into Tafunsak.
