The Kosraebrillenvogel ( Zosterops cinereus ) is a songbird species from the family of the spectacled birds (Zosteropidae). It is endemic to the Caroline Island of Kosrae .

features

The Kosraebrillenvogel reaches a body length of 10 to 11 cm. The top of the adult birds is dirty ash gray. The skull and the upper wing-coverts are mouse gray. The indistinct white eye ring is very narrow and is often missing. The underside is dirty light ash gray, as is the reins . The flanks and the sides of the chest are a little darker than the rest of the underside. The beak is dark brown, the feet yellowish gray and the iris is brown. In juvenile birds, the beak is horn yellow with a dark tip on the upper beak and the plumage is darker.

Vocalizations

The singing has not yet been recorded. It probably consists of a sequence of several different twittering sounds. The call consists of a mostly short, rather loud chirping, similar to that of the house sparrow.

Habitat and way of life

The Kosraebrillenvogel inhabits overgrown habitats. The diet consists of berries and seeds, which are collected between branches and leaves in bushes or small trees. Probably also insects belong to the food spectrum. The Kosraebrillenvogel can be found singly or in pairs, but also in loud, quarrelsome flocks. Parents raising their young were observed in February. Further information on reproductive behavior is not known.

Systematics

The Kosraebrillenvogel and the Pohnpeibrillenvogel ( Zosterops ponapensis ) were previously considered conspecific and were called the Kittlitzbrillenvogel ( Zosteropos cinereus ). In 2016, both taxa were split off as separate species.

status

The Kosraebrillenvogel is of IUCN in the category "not at risk" ( least concern ) listed. Although it has a small range, its population is considered stable.
