Kottelats Silberfinblatt ( Monodactylus kottelati ) is a species of fish from the family of the fin leaves (Monodactylidae), which occurs in the northern Indian Ocean. The species is known so far from the area of the Laccadives and Sri Lanka, as well as from the Chilika brackish water lagoon on the coast of the Indian state of Odisha . Young fish caught near Medan on the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra could also belong to Monodactylus kottelati . The species was described in 1991 and named after Maurice Kottelat , a Swiss ichthyologist .

features

Kottelat's silver fin leaf has a laterally strongly flattened, oval, diamond-shaped body with dorsal and anal fin. The body height (without fins) corresponds to about 95% of the standard length . The specimens examined so far were 8 to 10 cm long, but the species could become much larger. The body and the unpaired fins are covered by small, easily peeling scales. The eyes are medium-sized, their diameter is larger than the length of the "snout" (in fish the distance from the front edge of the eye to the tip of the mouth). The short, sloping mouth is covered with small, conical teeth that are arranged in bands.

The rear soft rays of the dorsal and anal fin, which are located above or below the center of the body, are greatly elongated, the rays of the anal fin even more than those of the dorsal fin. The caudal fin is straight or is slightly indented. Ventral fins are only rudimentary or, in adult specimens, no longer present at all. The pectoral fins are small. Kottelat's silver fin leaf is silvery colored with sooty to blackish tips of the dorsal and anal fin. The rear edge of the anal fin is also dark. The caudal fin base is whitish, its rear edge is light yellow. Young fish also show two vertical black stripes on each side of the body, one that runs through the eye and a second in front of the base of the pectoral fin.

Compared to the silver fin leaf ( Monodactylus argenteus ), Kottelat's silver fin leaf has a higher body and the rear edge of the dorsal and anal fin is almost straight, while it is clearly concave in Monodactylus argenteus .

Kottelats Silberfinblatt lives near the coast in the sea, as well as in the brackish water of estuaries and lagoons, usually at depths of less than 5 meters. It is not known whether the fish can tolerate fresh water. Kottelat's Silberfinblatt usually lives in swarms and is often found between sunken trees.
