The Kowai River is a river in the Waimakariri District of the Canterbury region on New Zealand's South Island .

It rises on the southern flank of the Torlesse Range at the foot of the Southern Alps . After initially heading south, the river turns east and crosses the upper Canterbury Plains . West of Springfield it flows into the Waimakariri River .

The State Highway 73 follows the river at its rise until shortly before the Porters Pass .
