Almost all residents live in the settlement of Kowanyama in the southern LGA on Magnificent Creek.
history
Kowanyama means "many waters" in the Aboriginal language Yir-Yoront and refers to the river delta of the Mitchell River to the north . The first mission was established at Topsy Creek in 1905 and moved north in 1919. In 1964 a cyclone destroyed the mission, it was rebuilt and placed under official management. In 1987, the indigenous people were given a 250 km² piece of land over which they took control. In 2004, the Kowanyama Shire was founded, which includes the entire river delta in addition to the settlement, and thus granted the Aborigines local self-government.
administration
The Kowanyama Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
